Hands-on with the Samsung T629 slider

Last week, T-Mobile announced the addition of three Samsung phones to their ever-so-growing available phones.

I have since gotten some hands on time with the higher end of the available, the T629 slider. Hit the jump to see my first impressions.

The innards aren't too spectacular. And by innards I mean the software side of this phone. It carries the same 'ole, traditional Samsung GUI and operating system. It does have the newer sub-menu selection system that makes the navigation a bit quicker and easier. The camera comes in at an above-average 1.3 megapixels. It can take some average pictures, good for that camera phone type of quality. Software wise it is just another ho-hum phone. The Bluetooth works, the MP3 player works, and it makes and receives calls, text messages, etc. It is the form factor that makes this phone really special.

The phone is very small and slim. It is definitely thinner than some of the other popular sliders out there *ahem*Chocolate. The sliding mechanism is a bit firm—meaning it doesn't slide as easily I would like, but then again it prevents the phone from sliding open when pulling from the pocket.

Even though it is thin, it still feels like a actual phone when holding it up to the face. The keypad is similar to the RAZR-style keypad, being flat. Other than that, the T629 is a nice, thin slider that does it's job pretty well.

It is a decent phone if you are looking for something that gets the job done as a phone. It makes and receives calls, text messages, etc. But the slightly higher price tag of $150 might get you looking for another slim phone—like a Motorola.

So if you are looking for a good, thin slider that is better than the average freebie phone, then I would say go with the T629, or the T619, the cheaper, clamshell equivalent to this slider.
