Samsung D550 review

At CommunicAsia, Samsung announced a buttony handset that they call the Samsung D550.

The clamshell design hides a QWERTY keypad which explains the large number of buttons on the handset. The design is something of an enigma and you need to have a clear look at the accompanying images. Evidently, the handset can be closed as a clamshell so that its easy to carry around

However once you open up ; it would have been too difficult to llok at the screen at one end and the QWERTY keypad at the other. An ingenious solution has been arrived upon by Samsung's engineers. The display is attached to the phone from only one corner hinge (dual hinged clamshell) and can be folded so that the screen arrives on top of the keypad.

It reminds me of the Motorola clamshell which looked the same when this one is folded. However the D550 is of course much better due to the fact that its much more compact yet affords the ease of use of a full keyboard. In fact the D550 shares its form factor with the MPx, the much awaited handset from Motorola which sank without a trace.

Of course the form factors not the only thing that Samsung is counting on to make sure you buy it. The D550 will also enjoy a 1.3 Megapixel digital camera, A Transflash memroy card slot as well as support for Mp3 and AAC files.

Owing to the camera and audio support, the internal memory of the handset is also huge. A mind boggling 80 megabytes is present. The internal display is a superb 256,000 color TFT screen. However the external one dissappoints being a OLED display

As for other features, the phoen will have the best in connectivity right from Bluetooth, USB and WAP. It will even have support of push email (based on Blackberry's transport version 2.0). While more details are awaited, the D550 will be weighing in excess of a 100 grams (about 120 to be precise). Lets hope that the form factor is the only thing that the D550 shares with Motorola's MPx.

The connection quality is high and rouses no complaints; it's typical for today phones. The sound in the loudspeaker is pure with no noises. The volume of the 64-tones polyphonic alert is medium, and mp3 melodies are loud enough to hear the device in a noisy street. The power of the vibra is average.
