Samsung P300 review

The SGH-P300 measures 86x54x8.9mm and weighs 65 grams, making it one of the smallest handset in the world.

Physically the Samsung P300 is almost exactly the same size as the VK Mobile VK2000, but it's one third heavier at 65 grams compared the the VK2000's 48 grams. However, the SGH-P300 packs in many more features than the VK handset.

So.. what's in the Samsung P300 ? Well, it's pretty remarkable really. There's a 1.8" 220x176 pixel display, a 1.3 megapixel camera with flash and video capture capabilities, Bluetooth, an MP3/AAC player, speakerphone, web browser and email client. There's no expandable memory though, and we are uncertain as to how much memory the P300 has internally - although we have seen third-party reports that the P300 actually comes with 90Mb which certainly would make it a viable music player.

There's no getting away from the fact that the SGH-P300 looks like a pocket calculator. The folding case (pictured left) reinforces this look too. The keys do looks more usable than the VK2000's too.

We don't want to dwell for too long on the VK2000 versus P300 debate, so let's say that they are both highly impressive devices - the VK2000 is lighter, prettier and cheaper than the Samsung, but the P300 is a fully-featured device with a much more impressive technical specification.

Ultimately, the Samsung SGH-P300 doesn't compromise much on features, despite its tiny weight and form factor. It squeezes in pretty much all the features of devices weighing 100 grams or more. Certainly, it's an odd looking phone, but the small physical size is going to give the handset plenty of "wow factor" in any case.

And as the manufacturer claims, the phone is capable of about 3 hours in the talk mode and about 160 hours in the standby. In Moscow the P300 worked for about three days in case of two hours of talks and up to 20 minutes of using other functions (with a case on and the extra battery). And the phone only will work for about a day and a little in case of similar load.
